Ο Jean-Marc Rollez, παρακολούθησε αρχικά μαθήματα πιάνου, όμως σε ηλικία δεκατεσσάρων ετών κατάλαβε πως το κοντραμπάσο ήταν το πραγματικό του πάθος. Θεωρήθηκε ταλαντούχος μουσικός καθώς το 1951 έγινε δεκτός από το Εθνικό Ωδείο Μουσικής του Παρισιού (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris) από το οποίο αποφοίτησε δύο χρόνια αργότερα. Την ίδια χρονιά της αποφοίτησης του κατέλαβε την πρώτη του θέση στην Εθνική Όπερα του Μόντε Κάρλο (Opéra National de Monte-Carlo). Το 1956, μετακινήθηκε στην Φιλαρμονική Ορχήστρα της Γαλλικής τηλεόρασης και ραδιοφωνίας, (Orchestre Philharmonique de l'O.R.T.F, télévision et radio françaises) και εμφανίστηκε ως σολίστας της Όπερας Κομίκ (Opéra Comique) το 1957 και της Όπερας του Παρισιού (Opéra de Paris) το 1970. Ως σολίστας επίσης εμφανίστηκε με τις ορχήστρες Pasdeloup και Lamoureux. Το 1978 επέστρεψε στο Εθνικό Ωδείο Μουσικής του Παρισιού αυτή την φορά με την ιδιότητα του καθηγητή. Δημοσίευσε έναν μεγάλο αριθμό ηχογραφήσεων και συνέχισε να διδάσκει και να δίνει ρεσιτάλ και συναυλίες σε όλον τον κόσμο. 

Jean-Marc Rollez studied piano and then double bass , winning first prize for this instrument at the Roubaix Conservatory. Admitted to the Conservatoire national supérieur de Paris, he also won first prize there after two years.

As an orchestral musician, he was successively a member of the Monte -Carlo and ORTF orchestras , then, as principal double bass, of the Lamoureux Orchestra , the Pasdeloup Orchestra (between 1957 and 1991), the Théâtre national de l'Opéra-Comique and the Paris Opera .

At the same time, Rollez gave solo concerts with various orchestras in Paris , France and abroad. For the conductor and musicographer Alain Pâris , "the beauty of the sounds he drew from the double bass, his dexterity and his musicality soon brought him international fame.

As a teacher, Jean-Marc Rollez taught at the Institut des hautes études musicales in Montreux before becoming a professor at the Paris Conservatoire between 1978 and 1996, training a whole generation of French double bass players.
